Germaine Acogny, Ikone des zeitgenössischen afrikanischen Tanzes und Trägerin des Goldenen Löwen der Biennale Danza, begibt sich mit dem berührenden Solo „Somewhere at the Beginning“ auf einen tastenden Weg in die Vergangenheit: zu den Ursprüngen und den Ahnen, die sie wie Schatten und Zeugen begleiten.
Germaine Acognys Körper erzählt von Aufbruch und Rückkehr, vom Verlassen des afrikanischen Kontinents, vom Leben im europäischen Exil und von der Heimkehr. Die Performance entfaltet sich als leiser Dialog zwischen Kontinenten und der Suche nach Identität – niemals abgeschlossen, sondern immer wieder neu im Werden. In der intimen Regie des deutsch-französischen Regisseurs Mikaël Serre öffnet sich ein Raum des Erinnerns, der das Persönliche, Fragile und Unabgeschlossene in den Mittelpunkt stellt.
Die Performance, die als Berlin-Premiere Ende Mai im Radialsystem gezeigt wird, bildet den Auftakt der Reihe UNEXPECTED LESSONS – Knowledges of Body and Sound von Mai 2026 bis Februar 2027. Ergänzt werden die Vorstellungen durch ein mehrtägiges Begleitprogramm: Neben Workshops und einem künstlerischen Begegnungsraum zeigen wir am 25. Mai die Berlin-Premiere des Dokumentarfilms „Germaine Acogny – Die Essenz des Tanzes“ von Greta-Marie Becker. Der Film läuft ab dem 28. Mai deutschlandweit in den Kinos an.
Die Reihe ist Teil des seit 2020 laufenden künstlerischen Forschungsprojekts TALKING OBJECTS LAB. Das LAB erkundet Wissen jenseits eurozentrischer Wissenssysteme und wird von einem internationalen Kurator*innenteam aus Senegal, Kenia und Deutschland geleitet. www.talkingobjectslab.org
Germaine Acogny is an African contemporary dance icon, and winner of the Dance Biennale Golden Lion. In her moving solo “Somewhere at the Beginning,” she takes tentative steps into the past, towards the origins and ancestors that accompany her like shadows and witnesses.
Germaine Acogny’s body tells stories of departure and return, of leaving the African continent, of life in European exile, and of homecoming. The performance unfolds as a quiet dialogue between continents, and a search for identity – never complete, always in a state of becoming. Under the intimate direction of the German-French director Michaël Serre, a space is made for memory, in which the personal, the fragile and the unfinished is central.
The performance will celebrate its Berlin premiere in Radialsystem at the end of May, opening the series UNEXPECTED LESSONS – Knowledges of Body and Sound, which runs from May 2026 until February 2027. The performances will be supplemented by an accompanying programme over several days: alongside workshops, we will show the Berlin premiere of the documentary film “Germaine Acogny – The Essence of Dance” by Greta-Marie Becker. The film will be showing in German cinemas from 28 May 2026.
The series is part of TALKING OBJECTS LAB, an artistic research project that has been running since 2020. The LAB explores knowledge beyond Eurocentric systems of knowledge, led by a team of international curators from Senegal, Kenya and Germany. www.talkingobjectslab.org
