Der Karneval von Trinidad und Tobago ist ein Zeit-Zwischen-Raum zwischen Macht und Widerstand, verkleidet in Stoff und Metall, Pailletten und Schlamm. Im MAS CAMP verliert man sich selbst – und findet im Echo etwas Wahrhaftigeres. „Eine Frage von Leben und Tod“, wie die Künstlerin Felisha Carénage es nennt. In MAS-CAMPs werden Karnevalskostüme entworfen, Probleme gelöst und dann von leidenschaftlichen und oft sozial prekären Menschen hergestellt. Das sind keine gewöhnlichen Werkstätten – es sind Orte der Fantasie, des Überlebens und des handwerklichen Könnens. Hier bringt dir jemand bei, wie du dir mit Hilfe der Geschichte einen Vorteil verschaffen kannst. Hier spielen Siebdruck, Drahtbiegen, Holzbiegen und Batik mit Klassenmobilität, Sicherheit und Fortschritt. Träume werden genäht, gefiedert und ins Leben gerungen, dann abgeschwitzt, verstreut und am Aschermittwochmorgen weggefegt.

Im November 2024 verwandelte Carénage den Barazani-Projektraum im Rahmen des Dekoloniale Festivals in ein solches MAS CAMP. Und nun kehrt sie zu BARAZANI.berlin zurück, um mit uns zu teilen, was die Stelzenläufer, die Moko Jumbies, seitdem selbst heraufbeschworen haben. Stelzenläufer sind göttliche Geister, Wächter des Dazwischen. Unter ihrem Schutz ist eine Stadt offen für MAS.

Trinidad and Tobago‘s Carnival is a slippery timespace between power and resistance, masquerading in fabric and metal, sequins and mud. In the Mas you are losing yourself – and finding something truer in the echo. “A life-or-death thing,” as artist Felisha Carénage calls it. In Mas Camps, costumes for Carnival are conceived, problem-solved and then produced by passionate and often socially precarious persons. These are no ordinary workshops – they are sites of imagination, survival, and skill. This is where someone teaches you how to sew yourself a bargain with history. This is silk screen and wire-bending and wood-bending and tie-dye in play with class mobility, safety and progress. Dreams are stitched, feathered, and wrestled into being, then sweated off, scattered and swept up by Ash Wednesday morning.

And now, she returns to BARAZANI.berlin to share with you what the stilt walkers, the Moko Jumbies have since themselves invoked. Stilt-walkers are divine ghosts, guardians of the in-between. Under their protection, a city is open to mas, laid out to its people.
